Brand new for the winter of 2023, the Time to Run Men's Lightweight Waterproof Pace Running Jacket offers the perfect solution for those in need of a lightweight, waterproof, breathable running jacket.
Being conceived due to phenomenal customer demand, the two key criteria that we had whilst designing the garment was that as well as being both waterproof and breathable, it had to be affordable.
Looking at the issue of fabric first, the easy option would be to use a budget fabric, one that would meet our demands of affordability. However, there would have to be a compromise on performance. We first looked at fabrics that as a minimum met the British Standard requirement of having a hydrostatic head in excess of 1,500 mmH2O. (The British Standard is that fabric should achieve a waterproof rating of at least 1,500 mmH2O in a Hydrostatic Head Test for a garment to be classed as 'waterproof'. This means that the fabric should be capable of withstanding 1.5 metres of water over 24 hours before the water soaks through the fabric.) These fabrics invariably are coated which means that with regards to breathability, although they may have a MVTR figure in excess of 1,000g/m²/24h, they are not overly breathable.
Taking the issue of the fabric a step further, and moving away from coated fabrics, we looked in detail at 2.5 layer laminates. In effect, the fabrics looked at were pieces of fabric that were laminated to a waterproof film, hence creating a waterproof fabric that was both infinitely more waterproof and breathable than the cheaper coated fabrics. To put it into context, the fabric that we selected, (and are using in this garment,) has a hydrostatic head in excess of 8,500 mmH2O so exceeding the BS requirements by over four times. In terms of breathability, the fabric has a lab certified figure in excess of 5,000g/m²/24h-a substantial improvement on the cheaper fabrics, but at a small increase in cost. Weighing the pros and cons of the fabrics up-our decision was straight forward. The small increase in cost vastly outweighed the option of using an inferior fabric.
The garment purposely has a regular fit, so not overly athletic, but not overly roomy. This allows the user to wear it with either a thin base layer underneath, or a mid layer in colder conditions. If in doubt, we do recommend that a size up is taken.
