Nutrition For Runners
When running or exercising, two important things happen. a) You lose water through the process of perspiration as the body attempts to regulate its temperature and b) Carbohydrate reserves are used to fuel your progress.
During shorter periods of exercise, drinking plain water should be enough to replace any fluid lost through perspiration whilst food consumed after exercise should allow replenishment of carbohydrate stores within the muscles.
However, during longer, more sustained periods of exercise, or in warmer climes, (including gyms,) the body will need to replenish its levels of not only fluids but also valuable electrolytes and carbohydrates.
By ingesting a combination of sports drinks and/or energy bars/gels, performance can be enhanced considerably. Especially when exercising for more than ninety minutes.
